AUTISM SPEAKS

Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.

Alpha Xi Delta college chapters and alumnae associations promote understanding and acceptance of autism and raise and funds by participating in various Autism Speaks Walk events across the country and holding AmaXIng Challenges at our host institutions. With one in 68 children diagnosed with autism and no known cure, Alpha Xi Deltas are committed to improving the lives of children and families affected by autism.

WHAT IS AUTISM?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. There are many types of autism caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences. The term “spectrum” reflects the wide variation in challenges and strengths possessed by each person with autism.

Autism’s most-obvious signs tend to appear between 2 and 3 years of age. In some cases, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Some developmental delays associated with autism can be identified and addressed even earlier. Autism Speaks urges parents with concerns to seek evaluation without delay, as early intervention can improve outcomes.

RAISING THE FUNDS

As a chapter, we host our bi-annual philanthropy event, Taco Xi, where we sell late night breakfast tacos to other University of Texas students at our house with all proceeds going towards Autism Speaks. In the fall, we also host a flag football tournament called Football FrenXi with many different student organizations. Dedicated chapter members also raise funds individually for Autism Speaks by writing letters to friends and family and selling used items and volunteering their time in exchange for donations. This past school year, we were able to raise over $24,000 for Autism Speaks!

INCREASING UNDERSTANDING

Alpha Xi Delta is committed to increasing acceptance and understanding of autism on campus, in our community, and across the globe. Every year our chapter reunites with other Alpha Xi Delta chapters across the state to volunteer at the Austin Autism Speaks Walk. The Walk is a fun-filled, family friendly event and is our city's single most powerful force to fund vital research for autism.  Since 2015, Alpha Xi Delta has been the named sponsor of the Autism Speaks Walk.

During World Autism Month in April, we set up tables on campus to educate our peers about autism, and we Light It Up Blue to promote the acceptance and understanding of autism. We bring the entire greek community together by giving every house blue lights. All of our houses are a small group of over ten thousand buildings across the world that shine blue for the month.
