"To the Girls Going Through Recruitment" by Cristina Rebello, former Alpha Xi President

Hi! My name is Cristina Rebello, and I graduated from UT in May. I am currently living in New York City and working at Lazard Asset Management. It’s crazy that I’m not going to be in Austin for recruitment this year, but I could not be more excited for all the PNMs who are about to start their amazing journey!

When I first stood in line outside of the Alpha Xi house as a PNM, I had no idea what would be waiting for me inside. That house and the amazing sisterhood inside became my college family and home away from home. Alpha Xi Delta has given me years of constant sleepovers, countless hours of service to the organization which taught me more than I could’ve imagined, the opportunity to be chapter president to try to make the sorority experience all that it can be for all of my sisters, and a lifetime of friendships. The Alpha Xi house will always be home to me, and I could not be more thankful for the time I was able to spend there.

For the PNMs getting ready to start this incredible process, I have a few pieces of advice!

  1. It is Texas, so don’t worry about the sweat too much. Everyone is going to be sweating their makeup off, and no one expects your hair to be perfect on the 8th party of the day. Just relax and remember that it’s your time to show off your personality. We’ve probably seen each of our sisters without makeup and in pajamas at some point, so just try to feel comfortable.

2. Really try to find the house that is right for you! You can tell if you click with the girls after a few days, and chances are, if you’re being yourself it’ll be a great feeling when you know you’re home. It is also ok if it’s not an immediate click either - just enjoy the ride and know that everything will work out in the end!

3. GET EXCITED! You’re about to start a new chapter of your life. It may seem intimidating at first, but remember to enjoy it. This is a great opportunity to try new things and meet as many people as possible - as big as UT is, you will see them around. Recruitment can be such an impactful experience, so go along with the process and enjoy!

There is no way I could have predicted how much Alpha Xi Delta would mean to me, and I hope every PNM finds that and even more in their college home. More than anything, be sure to have fun in the coming weeks and years and take advantage of all the opportunities UT and Greek life have in store for you.

TFJ!!

Cristina
